Scope and Content

Topics of correspondence include condolences for the death of Mountstuart Elphinstone's sister, Mrs Keith Erskine; concerns over the health of James Erskine; establishing native hospitals (Mss Eur F88/120/33); and queries prompted by Elphinstone's publication 'The History of India'. Also includes a letter from the Raja of Satara seeking Elphinstone's help with the Peshiwars and letters from Lord Elphinstone asking for Elphinstone's advice if he should resign the Governorship of Madras and his reaction on hearing he has been unsuccessful in obtaining a peerage. Three letters, Mss Eur F88/120/1, Mss Eur F88/120/10 and Mss Eur F88/120/14 are in French and one letter and two items, Mss Eur F88/120/73 and Mss Eur F88/120/79, are in Italian
