  • William Ready (1860-1927) was born in London of Irish Roman Catholic parentage. He was orphaned at an early age and spent much of his childhood living rough on the streets. Ready was eventually taken into the well-known Muller's Orphanage in Bristol. Converted at the age of seventeen, Ready trained for the Bible Christian ministry and offered himself for the work in New Zealand. He founded the Dunedin Central Mission in 1890 and in the space of a few years built up one of the largest congregations in the colony. Ready was a preacher and evangelist of remarkable powers, and was also one of the leaders of the New Zealand temperance movement.
