Scope and Content

Topics of correspondence includes general news from friends and family, discussing various illnesses and death of relatives (Hay M Erskine had to cancel a visit as he had to go and sort out matters after receiving the news of the death of his cousin, Maria Erskine). Mountstuart Elphinstone had asked his nephew Lord Elphinstone to commission a new dressing box for Mrs Catalina Paulina Elphinstone Fleeming after she had lost hers while visiting him (for example Mss Eur F88/139/6). He also received a letter of thanks from Charles MacFarlane, to whom he had given a cheque for £50 after hearing about his difficulties (Mss Eur F88/139/17). Some of the letters have brief annotations by Elphinstone regarding his response. Mss Eur F88/139/19 is written in French
