Volumes and periodicals containing poems by Strachan

Scope and Content

This series contains: cuttings of poems by Strachan taken from various magazines and journals; numerous complete issues of journals and magazines in which his poems appeared; and one full-length poetry anthology in which his work is represented. The magazines and journals predominantly date from the 1940s, when Strachan's own writing of poetry flourished. They include such well-known literary and political publications as The Tribune, The Spectator, The New English Weekly, The Adelphi, Time and Tide, and - notably - the 1944 'New Poets Issue' of Tambimuttu's Poetry London, where Strachan's work appeared alongside that of Patrick Kavanagh, Maurice Lindsay, James Reeves, Alan Ross, Stevie Smith and R.S. Thomas among others. After a long hiatus in which he pursued numerous other projects, in 1976 Strachan began to publish his own poems in journals and magazines again, and represented here are poems which appeared in The London Magazine, The Contemporary Review and The Countryman.
