Catalogues of exhibitions of livres d'artiste from the Strachan Collection

Scope and Content

Catalogues of exhibitions of livres d'artiste from Strachan's own personal collection. Those which appeared during his lifetime were largely compiled by Strachan himself, with an introductory essay. They reflect the way he sought to spread the word about the livre d'artiste by exhibiting material from his own collection, collaborating with museum curators over exhibitions, and donating material to public institutions. The exhibitions represented (two of which were posthumous) are as follows:

  • /1-2 'The Artist and the Book in France: Painters, sculptors, engravers, Matisse to Minaux, 1932-1963'. Ashmolean Museum Department of Western Art, Oxford, 11-25 May 1963. Two copies of the catalogue, one of which is annotated.
  • /3 'The Artist and the Book in France: painters, sculptors, engravers, 1931-1967'. Scottish National Gallery, 7 July-6 August 1967.
  • /4-5 'The Artist and the Book in France: Matisse to Minaux: painters, sculptors, engravers'. [Touring exhibition at Leicester, Bradford, Sheffield and Norwich, 1968-9]. Two copies of the catalogue, both annotated.
  • /6-7 'The Artist and the Book in France from Matisse to Vasarely'. Gardner Centre Gallery, Gardner Centre for the Arts, University of Sussex, Falmer. Two copies of the catalogue, one of which is annotated.
  • /8 'The Artist and the Book in France from Matisse to Vasarely'. The Print Room, Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, 8 February-8 March 1971.
  • /9-11 'The Artist and the Book in France from Matisse to Vasarely'. Arts Centre, Folkestone [1975]. Three copies of the catalogue, all of which are annotated; two of them are heavily amended to form the basis of the 1978 catalogue.
  • /12-13 'The Artist and the Book in France: Matisse to Vasarely'. Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, 2-27 February 1978. Two copies of the catalogue, one of them annotated.
  • /14 'The Art of the Letter: written, painted, carved, engraved and printed'. Playhouse Gallery, Harlow, 21 June-21 July 1979. This exhibition included work by Robert Blanchet, Antoni Clavé, Krol and Louttre which was loaned by Strachan.
  • /15-16 'The Artist and the Book in France: 20th century painters, sculptors, engravers'. Playhouse Gallery, Harlow, 18 September-11 October [1980]. Two copies of the catalogue, one of which is annotated and includes a loose addenda insert.
