Flowers and Insects

Partly typewritten and partly autograph. Contains poetry drafts, some of which are not included in the published collection including a number about daffodils, 'The Tacax', 'The Begonia for her pot', 'Balsam', 'Snowdrops', 'Wild Garlic', 'Harvest', 'Violet and Apple Blossom', 'The Flea', 'A Violet at Lough Aughrisburg' and part of 'Saint's Island'. Notes on plants and flowers, lists of words, a content list for the collection and a publisher’s proof are included. A number of poetry drafts vary significantly from the published versions, including 'Sunstruck Foxglove', 'The Honey-Bee', 'Sketch of a Goddess' and 'Two Tortoiseshell Butterflies'. A letter and note from Leonard Baskin are also included. A notebook and two pages of loose notes are included although their link to Flowers and Insects is unclear. 'The Rose' and 'The Pigeon's Wings' are also included although they were published elsewhere in Ted Hughes Collected Poems 'Uncollected 1979' and 'Uncollected 1983-86' respectively. ‘A Sparrow Hawk’ is also included although it was not published until 1989 as part of Wolfwatching. A blue notebook is included however its connection with the poetry collection is unclear.
