Scope and Content

Partly printed and partly autograph material originally in box marked 'Gawain'. Comprises five volumes, four of which are different printed editions of the text, as follows - Sir Gawain and the Green Knight edited by J.R.R. Tolkien and E.V. Gordon, 2nd edn. Norman Davis (Oxford University Press, 1967)); Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Pearl and Sir Orfeo, transl. J.R.R. Tolkien, ed. C. Tolkien (Harper Collins, 1975); Sir Gawain and the Green Knight 2nd edn, B. Stone (Penguin Classics, 1974); Sir Gawain and the Green Knight ed. and trans. J. Winny (Broadview Press, 1992). ‘December 16th 1992 Ted Hughes’ has been written on the frontispiece of the Davis edition. The final volume is a notebook containing Hughes's undated draft of his version of the text. Further material can be found amongst The School Bag papers in Add MS 88918/16/3.

Part IV of the romance was published in The School Bag, which was edited by Hughes and Seamus Heaney and published in 1997. Parts I, II and IV were also later published in Ted Hughes Selected Translations (2006) edited by Daniel Weissbort.
