Scope and Content

The volume has the original pagination pp.337-721, ff.2-5 are blank, and f.1 contains comments on 'Effects of the influence of the sun & moon over the human body & its diseases' which is seemingly quite unrelated to the rest of the volume's contents. Each lecture is clearly numbered, although none of them are dated, writing is on the recto of each page only, with occasional notes on the verso, and there is a subject index in the rear. The notes commence part way through lecture 21 and finish on lecture 34 where they continue on from in volume 3.

The contents of the lectures according to the index are: indirect causes of death; causes of death three (stimulant, sedative & septic); stimulant & sedative; septic; stimulant power known by pulse; stimulant power known by state of heat etc.; want of remissions in fever; topical determinations; recapitulation; insula sanguinis; observation on the pulse; observation on the blood; critical days; general plan for the cure of fever; methodus medendi; antiphlogistic regimen; bleeding; cathartics; refrigerants; diluents; neutral salts; sudorifics; emetics; blisters; sinapisms; warm bathing or pediluvium; cold & tonics; tonics; tossile; bark; contragerva, serpentaria & wine; antispasmodics; indication to remove a putrefactive tendency; doctrine of putrefaction; concoction and assimilation.

The volume bears the bookplate of the Radford Library, Saint Mary's Hospital, Manchester, which also indicates that it was allocated the reference number Q128 viz. their 1877 catalogue. The volume has since been referenced J6 C67 as part of an alternative system. The spine reads 'Cullen's Practice of M. Vol.2'.
