St. Tudno's Church, Great Orme

Scope and Content

The large tombstone in the Churchyard commemorates the Welsh Poet, Tudno. Also in the Churchyard lies buried the six year old son of the Statesman, John Bright.

The Church is dedicated to St. Tudno of Maes-Gwyddno. The original Church would have been made of wattle and would have been replaced in the 12th century by a stone church and it is probably to this period that the oldest parts of St. Tudno's belong.

The bulk of the Church dates from about 1500. The Church was extensively repaired about 1855 after being damaged by a storm. The roof had blown off in 1839 but the Church was not restored until 1855 when new windows were put in. In 1905-1906 the original floor level was found.

A Pulpit was placed outside in 1914 because of the popular Sunday Morning Services held in the open air for tourists. This was formerly the Parish Church of Llandudno and is of great interest. It is is said to stand on the site of the Cell of St. Tudno who lived in the 6th century. Part of the North Wall and the Font are thought to date back to the 11-12th century but the remainder belongs to the 15th century.
