Torness Nuclear Power Station

Scope and Content

Client: Sir Robert McAlpine and Sons Ltd / National Nuclear Corporation Ltd.

Relating to the proposal by the South of Scotland Electricity Board for the construction of a nuclear power station of the advanced gas-cooled reactor (AGR) type at Torness Point, East Lothian, Scotland. The consultant for the preliminary civil engineering works was James Williamson and Partners, and the contractor was Sir Robert McAlpine and Sons. The main civil works for the station were designed by the Nuclear Power Company (NPC). Rowe's curriculum vitae states that his client was Sir Robert McAlpine, however documents imply that he was also retained by the Nuclear Power Company as an advisor on the ground conditions and foundations. Following rock movements in 1981, Rowe advised the National Nuclear Corporation Ltd (NNC) on site monitoring.

[Building of the power station commenced in 1980, and it was commissioned in 1988.]
