The bundle contains correspondence relating to the presentation to the rectory of Ashton under Lyne co. Lancs, after the resignation of Hon Anchitel Grey (1774-1833), third son of George Harry Grey (1737-1819), 5th Earl of Stamford, in 1810. Lord Stamford intended that the living should be presented to his grandson, George Chetwode, son of his daughter Henrietta (1764-1826) and her husband Sir John Chetwode of Oakley co. Staffs. However, George Chetwode was then only eighteen years old and a student at Oxford. Having failed to persuade his nephew Rev Harry Grey (1783-1860) to accept the living temporarily, Lord Stamford therefore presented Rev John Hutchinson, on the understanding that he would resign when Chetwode was of an age to assume the living.
[The correspondence continues in EGR4/1/9/7 below. George Chetwode held the living from 1816 until 1870. "He scarcely ever visited Ashton, though drawing a large income from it". John Hutchinson remained as chaplain to Chetwode until 1823 when he became the first incumbent of the new church of St Peter, Ashton under Lyne: see Victoria History of the Counties of England, Victoria history of the county of Lancaster, ed. William Farrer and J. Brownbill, 8 vols (London: 1906-14), vol. 4, p. 350.]
