Born in a very old noble family, Sosthène de La Rochefoucauld was a devoted Ultraroyalist at the return of the Bourbons in 1814. He was elected deputy in 1815-6 and in 1827-30. In 1824, he was also appointed Director of Fine Arts and protected Hugo at the beginning of his career.
