Scope and Content

This group of three French letters are written by a tutor and companion named Gerard to the Earl and Countess of Devonshire as they were, and seem to concern their sons William [and Henry?] Cavendishes' education and travel abroad. The letters concern: their arrival and settling into the academy at the Hague for six months; the Cavendishes' eagerness to learn; the quality of the academy; suitable lodgings; wishes to Lord Cavendish; leaving the Hague and travelling to Italy or Germany, mentioning Augsbourg, Munich, Rome, Venice, Florence and Sienna then Prague, Dresden, Berlin and Hanover; receiving credit for their journey; unreceived post; receiving orders from Lord Cavendish for the direction of their onward journey considering certain difficulties some routes may have; arriving in Brussels; souvenirs from their journey such as table a L'armée; dinner with Mr Electuer. He mentions Lord Paget, Lord Morpeth and Lord Durley.
