Letters from Richard Cavendish (formerly Chandler) to William Cavendish, 3rd Duke of Devonshire and Rev James Gisborne

Scope and Content

In these letters Richard Chander (Cavendish from 1751) writes to his friend Reverend James Gisborne and to William Cavendish, 3rd Duke of Devonshire and relative via his wife Elizabeth Cavendish (daughter of Lord James Cavendish and a cousin of the 3rd Duke).

To Reverend James Gisborne he writes concerning: wishing Mr Gisborne to attend him at his chambers to talk to his sister Cavendish [Barbara Cavendish?]; his thanks for Rev Gisborne's congratulation on his marriage to a lady that will make him happy [1731]; the news that Calice has been restored but must have regard for future behaviour; super fine tabacco he is sending; a descriptions of his sister [Barbara Chandler?]'s abusive relationship with her husband [a William Cavendish]; and articles of the peace exhibited against him in the King's bench; obtaining prebends; Mr Fall and Mr Oftley in bad health; asking his father for the prebendery of Durham for Rev Gisborne.

To the 3rd Duke he writes concerning: resigning his post due to gout and the living at Sedgfield.

Also included in this group of letters is a table plan of food served at a dinner at Stavely Hall, 4 September 1731 (CS1/613/3).

Administrative / Biographical History

Cavendish, Richard, formerly Chandler [son of Edward Chandler, Bishop of Durham; m.(1722) Elizabeth, daughter of Lord James Cavendish, of Latimer, 3rd son of 1st Duke of Devonshire].

His adopted surname of Cavendish was agreed by codicil to Lord James Cavendish's will (who's only son had predeceased him.)

Rev. James Gisborne was rector of Staveley, Derbyshire, and prebendary of Durham, and married to Anne.
