Scope and Content

Written from Liverpool. She is sending him a parcel of 'The Shields' with 'notices of American matters'. The delegates, Mr HJ Wilson and Mr Gledstone, are coming to the meeting at her home on Wednesday afternoon. Speaks of the horrors of Paris and Italian outrages, but such cases must not be quoted unless there is official confirmation of them. If she were to tell him what she herself saw in Paris and 'what was the nature of the things which were the real cause of my breaking down in health, you would not believe me. I have not been believed in the past...'

Undated: This letter was written after the one dated 3 Mar because Josephine Butler says: 'I think it will be settled for HJ Wilson and Mr Gledstone to go to America', while in this letter she writes 'Mr Wilson and Mr Gledstone seem best pleased to accept this'. Mr Edmondson is asked to look over the selected 'Shields' before coming to the meeting on 'Wednesday' with the delegates for America, and to be sure to bring them back with him. The delegates departed on 13 Apr. The date might be Wed 29 Mar or Wed 5 Apr.
