Scope and Content

Correspondence with E.J. Phillips, journalist, relating to an expression of thanks for a promotion into a new post as [deputy chief] sub-editor at the Manchester Guardian. Also included is a request by Phillips to amend his employment from part-time in the sub-editors room, and partly on the corridor [editorial team, which is granted.] There are requests for and discussion of increases in salary. There is reference to Phillips' employment as editor of the Manchester Guardian Weekly, and his return to employment on the editorial team.

There is an internal memorandum discussing Phillips' column on horse racing, on which there has been a complaint by William Chapman, Central Board of Licensed Traders. There is also an internal memorandum on the procedure for payment for letters to the editor of the paper, with reference to a contribution by Sydney Haldane Olivier, civil servant, politician, and author. There is also a letter of thanks for a loan provided by the Manchester Guardian for the payment of hospital expenses for Phillips' wife, with reference to the completion of its repayment.

There is correspondence between Phillips and W.P. Crozier, relating to Phillips' requirement of time off work due to illness, with discussion of his recuperation. Also included is Phillips' decision to tender his notice of retirement, with discussion of pension, and accompanied by a related internal memorandum. There is also reference to bombs dropped in Shropshire during Phillips' recuperation by a German plane [during the Second World War]. There is discussion of the correspondence column of the paper, and the provision of news by Crozier of the office.

There is a letter of thanks from Phillips to A.P. Wadsworth for a letter of remembrance from the staff of Manchester Guardian, and discussion and praise of the paper.
