Scope and Content

Correspondence with Thomas S. Townend, journalist, relating to the provision by Townend of an article on the centenary of Edmund Cartwright, clergyman and inventor of the power loom, with discussion of Townend's previous employment at the Manchester Guardian and semi-retirement. Also included is an offer of an article and poem by Townend's daughter, Mrs Stafford Hill, for the back pages of the paper, which are acknowledged. There is provision by Townend of an articles from the East African Standard which makes reference to a refusal by the Manchester Guardian to publish a letter to the editor Walter Edwin Owen, clergyman and missionary, on colonial affairs. Also included is an internal memorandum discussing the subject.

There is discussion of an article on a case of [the death of a labourer from] flogging in Kenya in the Manchester Guardian, and the provision by Townend of an article, with discussion of Sir Henry Irving, actor, and the Davenport Brothers. There is discussion of the halfpenny tax on newspapers in New South Wales, and where information on the subject can be located, and a request by Townend that Scott provide A.C.C. Holtz, general manager of the Melbourne Argus, with a tour of the offices of the Manchester Guardian, which is granted.
