Administrative / Biographical History

Coal mining in Buckley, Flintshire, goes back to the 12th century; in the 19th century, numerous brickworks were in operation in the area, exploiting the availability of clay and fuel. Buckley Brick & Tile Co. Ltd was active from 1865 to 1963. Other Buckley brickworks included Hooton Brickworks Ltd, and Catherall and Co. Davison's Brickworks, Buckley, was active from 1952 to 1968. Castle Firebrick Co. was active, in Mold, Flintshire, from 1889 to 1951. Castle Brick Co. was active in Northop, Cheshire, from 1886 until 1973; in 1925, it began operating its new works as well as the old works. Charles Davison's Ewloe Barn Brick and Tile Works and Old Ewloe works was active from 1933 to 1951, and was later merged with General Refactories Ltd, and then taken over by the firm of G. R. Stein Ltd.
