Lunatic Hospital

Scope and Content

The Lunatic Hospital was completed in September 1765 on land at the Infirmary Piccadilly site. It was governed by a committee of the Infirmary's trustees. The first patient was admitted in May 1766 and by the mid 1770s it had around forty patients. Various extensions were made to the building, at one point it was larger than the Infirmary itself. In 1846, at a time when the Infirmary was considering major building expansion, the Infirmary purchased the Lunatic Hospital buildings and a new building was constructed at Cheadle, which became Cheadle Royal Hospital, which opened in 1850. It remained financially independent of the main Infirmary.
