Administrative / Biographical History
The Jewish Fresh Air Home developed out of a small Holiday Home at Chinley. This was only open during the summer due to its 'bleak' conditions and an appeal for funds to build a new home began in 1919. The Jewish Fresh Air Home and School for Delicate Jewish Children, Delamere, was founded by Miss Margaret Langdon. The first children were received in July 1921 and by the end of the year the Board of Education had approved the school as a Special School for Invalid Children. It was expanded in 1929. The aim of the Home was to bring delicate children, who were usually anaemic, pre-tubercular or under-nourished, back to good health and provide an education which the children might otherwise have lacked. Only children who could be helped were admitted, no children were admitted who required hospital treatment. Children were recommended by teachers, health visitors, hospitals etc. Medical attention for the children was provided by the Jewish Victoria Memorial Hospital, who also inspected children before admission. The School used progressive teaching methods which were seen to be very successful. Children were encouraged to participate in outdoor activities and Jewish religious observances were followed. When children left the home, they were visited by an After Care Committee. In the early years, the Home tended to deal with young children, who usually stayed between one and two years. Later, the role as a special school grew, and children up to the age of 14 were admitted. The name of the Home and School was changed in 1966 to Delamere Forest School for Delicate Jewish Children. The School still had the same aim and remained a small establishment with only 40 beds, however, methods had progressed. Delamere Forest School still exists as a special school with Jewish affiliation, concentrating on children with learning and behavioral difficulties.
