Letter

Scope and Content

Frederick Voigt to W. P. Crozier.

Location: Berlin.

Szapiro; he points out that Szapiro is Warsaw correspondent of several papers, such as the New York Times and the Philadelphia Public Ledger, and explains his arrangement with them.

He has met Dr Schade, whose grandfather, von Beyer, was a friend of Goethe, Mendelssohn, Maria von Weber, and others. Dr Schade has made an important literary discovery; he has found a bundle of manuscripts amongst his family papers, which include ten unknown poems by Goethe, several poems by Heine and three short stories by Hofmann. Dr Schade is allowing him to use the material for the M.G; he would like the M.G. to have first choice, as he likes the paper; German papers would pay him a fortune. He suggests writing some articles and quoting some of the poems; he asks their opinion, and makes a suggestion regarding payment to Dr Schade. He adds a second letter suggesting a storyline for the material.
