Scope and Content

Correspondence and papers from a box file labelled by EF 'Letters 1989'. Contains letters, faxes and other papers dating from 1989-1990. Correspondents represented include: BBC Radio Drama Department; Moris Farhi; Joel Feinstein; Gabriel Josipovici; Susan Fromberg Schaeffer; Emma Tennant; and Malcolm Williamson. There is also a photocopy of a letter from Maureen Lipman to her agent, relating to the possibility of appearing in one of EF's plays; and a photocopy of a letter from Leonard Fenton on the same topic.

Topics of correspondence include: a recording of EF's Man in Her Life to be broadcast on BBC Radio; the conferment of the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters on EF by the University of Leicester in 1989; book production/publication matters; readings; a request for EF to write an introduction to Doris Lessing's Martha Quest; and general personal matters.

The file also includes: TS poem by EF, 'Valentine for a Middleaged Spouse'; unmarked TS, 'Marie Stopes' by EF, faxed to the Independent, with a corrected draft of the same piece, and an issue of the Independent Magazine (9 September 1989) containing the article; cutting from the Sunday Times (10 September 1989) containing a review of EF's All You Need, with a covering postcard from 'Andrew'; paperwork relating to a visit to Struga Poetry Festival organised by the British Council; some loose pages of appointments from a filofax; TS review by EF of Elena Bonner's Alone Together; TS poem, 'Privacy of Lake Ohrid', by Ruth Fainlight, dedicated to EF; spiral bound proof copy of The Feast of Eurydice, music by Malcolm Williamson, words by EF; TS poem, 'Art', by Ruth Fainlight; and TS obituary by EF for Michael Dempsey (dated 8 January 1990).
