Correspondence files by period

Scope and Content

This series contains the majority of the correspondence in the archive. A very wide range of correspondents is represented, as indicated above; in addition there is some correspondence between EF and various family members including her husband and sons. Topics reflect the whole range of her work and include: publishing matters connected with most of her books; the reviewing and reception of her work; readings; festivals; judging panels for literary awards; fellowships held by EF; EF's own literary awards; her work as a reviewer; permissions requests; her role as a literary magazine editor; her work for radio and television; the work of fellow writers; and general personal correspondence. Most of the files contain additional material alongside the correspondence, such as: MSS, TSS and proofs of poems, articles and reviews by EF; work by other writers sent to EF; cuttings and printed ephemera; and photographs.

Arrangement

This series is arranged broadly chronologically, reflecting EF's own filing system. Arrangement is based on the dates given on EF's box labels, but it should be noted that many of the files contain material which falls outside of the stated date range, and therefore the sequence is not strictly chronological throughout.
