Letter from James Hill and Caroline Southwood Hill to Robert Owen

Scope and Content

Manuscript letter: James and Caroline Hill wish to obtain advice from Owen in regards to establishing an infant school, which he has experience having set up the New Lanark School. They detail their objective, which is that they hope to make the local children from the working classes "intelligent rational beings." Owen is informed that the Hills have land near the centre of the town where this school will be built. There is a small drawing of the layout of a building that is found on that ground. Other details are given in regards to the appointment of a mistress, food, and the expense of this endeavour.
