Miscellaneous Letters I

Scope and Content

Letter to Hamilton Hume [1797-1873, explorer of Australia] complaining that his illness means he is unable to get out of the house and attend a meeting. He states that he would not have made a worthwhile contribution to the meeting as 'it is now a question of legal measures and legal points, of neither of which I know anything.' The letter refers to a pamphlet, written by Hume, in defence of John Edward Eyre [1815-1901, explorer and colonial governor; at this time, he was governor of Jamaica, following the Morant Bay rebellion]. Ruskin was opposed to the Jamaica Committee, headed by John Stuart Mill [1806-1873, philosopher and economist] but his letter suggests that this involvement was not an active one at this time.

Dated at Denmark Hill [London].
