Miscellaneous Letters I

Scope and Content

Interesting letter to [Henry] Watson [1827-1903, clergyman] on the subject of tourism, masculinity, femininity and their plans for their current tour. Ruskin is 'delighted' that Watson and his sisters will be joining him in Italy, and states that he 'must put just a taste more of romance into it for Juliet's sake, and just a little less fatigue into it.' He goes on to talk more about fatigue and how it may spoil a holiday, commenting that gentlemen are more prone to it than ladies; 'one always supposes...; that a gentleman will be too proud to sit on his mule when he should.' He does admit that 'a lady...; may very well keep up with even very adventurous gentlemen.'

Dated at Turin [Italy].
