Scope and Content

Book file relating to the bilingual anthology German poetry, 1910-1975, translated and edited by Michael Hamburger (Manchester: Carcanet New Press, 1977). This contains only the manuscript of the book, without Hamburger's introduction or any preliminary pages, and with only very minimal annotation (presumably because it was set in-house at Carcanet). It consists of photocopied typescripts and photocopies of poems from earlier publications, in both German and English. The poets included do not appear in exactly the same order as the published version, and this has not been altered as it perhaps indicates a different original ordering: the order is as the published version from the beginning to the section by Wilhelm Lehmann; his work is then followed by that of Gottfried Benn, Oskar Loerke, Ernst Stadler, and Joachim Ringelnatz, and then the order reverts to that of the published version; Bernd Jentzsch and Rolf Dieter Brinkmann are in inverted order. Within each poet's section, the poems are not necessarily in their final published order. The manuscript is lacking the German versions of Cyrus Atabay's poems, the English versions of the poems by Yaak Karsunke, and both versions of the poem by Gerald Bisinger.
