Scope and Content

Book file relating to Monarchs and the muse: poems by monarchs and princes of England, Scotland and Wales, introduced by C.V. Wedgwood, edited by Sally Purcell and illustrated by Priscilla Eckhard (Oxford: Carcanet Press, 1972), published as part of the Fyfield series and printed by W. and J. Mackay. The book is represented by the manuscript only, in the form of a ribbon typescript, with the translations of Welsh poems [translated by Joseph Claven] photocopied from a published source. Typescript preliminaries (lacking the illustrator's note) and probably also the brief biographies of each monarch have been added by Carcanet. The heraldic motifs for each monarch are not included, although there are rough sketches of page layouts where they were to be inserted; the full-page illustrations are also omitted. C.V. Wedgwood's introduction has been annotated and signed by the author. Michael Schmidt has marked the manuscript up with printing instructions, mostly in red ink. Further pencil mark-up has also been added, possibly by the printers. The manuscript is stored with 5 invoices from the printers.
