Miscellaneous Letters I

Scope and Content

Interesting letter to [Arthur] Helps [1813-1875, social reformer and author] in which Ruskin muses on Columbus [inspired by a book sent to him by Helps] stating 'What business was America of his, I wonder?' He expresses his views on America in an amusing manner, stating 'it spoils our language, and pirates our books...; and sends over...; sugar to spoil our teeth with...; and gives people yellow fever.' He also comments on America's effect on landscape painting, slavery, smoking and exporting paintings [specifically Turners].
