Midwife's Register of Cases

Scope and Content

The register listed below, completed by B.O. Sullivan, contains the same details as the pupil midwives' registers (see above ACB 6/2/5/1-12 and ACB 6/2/6/1) but was held by a state registered midwife. The register was a legal record, intended to protect the midwife from any future accusations of malpractice. This register contains cases from across the country, including Birmingham, Kidderminster and Leeds. Only cases from August 1944 can be identified as from Fulford Maternity Hospital. As this register covers the years of the Second World War the variety of places probably reflects the shortage of trained nurses and midwives which led to their frequent relocation.

A register for the same purpose, although in pocket size, belonging to Nurse M. Tuke, for July 1932 - Dec. 1943, and containing York cases only, is at York City Archives, Acc. 157/14.
