Photographic

Scope and Content

This series contains Alan Wace’s personal photographic collection, including photo albums, black and white prints and negative albums. Dated materials cover the period 1905 to 1941, however some undated material may be earlier or later. The photos are mostly from Alan Wace’s early travels through Greece, Anatolia, Italy and Egypt. Some albums are dedicated to photos from cruises, such as the Pratt and Pelops cruises.

Administrative / Biographical History

The photograph albums, fourteen in total, were compiled and (in some cases) labelled by Alan Wace. Likewise, the negative albums are indexed at the front by Alan Wace. A number of further negatives and prints were kept in labelled envelopes, which were indexed and put in white envelopes by Elizabeth French during the 1980s.

Arrangement

The photographic material is physically arranged by type and thereafter the order from Elizabeth French’s initial indexing has been retained.

Other Finding Aids

Spreadsheet catalogue and card index available.

Physical Characteristics and/or Technical Requirements

Alan Wace's photographic collection includes examples of early types of photographic printing processes, such as cyanotypes and albumen prints. Due to acidic original packaging, some deterioration of film negatives has occurred and some photographs have faded, curled or become brittle. During 2016 the photograph albums were interleaved with buffered acid free tissue and the photographs and negatives previously stored in original envelopes were transferred to archival polyester enclosures for safe handling.
