Cover artwork - line drawings

Scope and Content

Two black and white, pen and ink line drawings by Charlotte Hough for the cover of the Puffin edition of 'Black Beauty', written by Anna Sewell. The drawings have been surface-mounted onto a single sheet of paper, side-by-side, with gridlines drawn around both to indicate the size of the cover. The illustration for the front cover is signed by the artist, and the mount paper is annotated with sizing instructions for printer. Two sheets of paper have been taped to the mount to form an overlay for the illustrations.

These line drawings would have been used by the printer to reproduce the black lines for the cover of the book. The colour elements of the cover would have been created separately, using the colour sketch [CH/02/02], and then the different elements would be merged together in the final printing.
