Scope and Content

Correspondence between John Charnley and Sir Harry Platt, orthopaedic surgeon, relating to discussion of suggestions by Platt that Charnley apply for a D.Sc at the University of Manchester, and seek election as a member of the Royal Society.

Also included is discussion of Charnley’s work at Wrightington [Hospital], his pupils, staff and teaching at the Centre [for Hip Surgery], and a proposed brochure on the centre. There is discussion of the recruitment of a senior registrar, arrangements for visits to the centre, the potential for a private clinic for foreign patients whose fees would pay for more staff, attract new consultants and researchers from abroad, and add to prestige of centre.

There is correspondence relating to discussion of the final fellowship examinations in England, of teaching by Charnley of Orthopaedics at the Manchester teaching hospital, and of Charnley’s views on teaching hospitals in general. Also included is reference to Disorders and Injuries of the Musculoskeletal System] by Bob [Robert] Salter.

There is correspondence relating to a proposal made to Charnley by James Turner, 1st Baron Netherthorpe for funds to establish a research institute and private clinic at Wrightington [Hospital] for hip surgery or prosthetic surgery, and discussion of potential for work in biomechanics, cement, plastics, pathology, haematology and bacteriology which might take place. Also included is discussion of the difficulties encountered in expanding private sector work.
