The Forensic Science Service, formerly known as the Central Research and Support Establishment, became an executive agency of the Home Office on April 1 1991. It provided forensic science services to the police service and government agencies of England and Wales, and also to other countries. The Service pioneered the use of large scale DNA profiling for forensic identification. In 2005 it became a government-owned company, but was closed in 2012 following financial losses.
