Scope and Content

Signed by Edward Wilks to take over Halton Colliery (sometimes spelt Horton).

Summary of clauses:

1. To take lease for 21 years at £200 a year for 1st 5 years, £300 a year for rest of term and to supply coals to Temple Newsam.

2. To have liberty to enclose Halton Moor and have the house recently built there and lands already enclosed except 2 acres.

3. To employ 18 pitmen at one time.

4. To have a lease of the farms then out of lease paying 12s. 6 d. per acre.

5. To pay taxes and assessments for the colliery and Halton Moore at the rate of £50 a year, but to pay taxes for the other farms with usual covenants.

6. To have a horse pump then in the Park to dress the sow.

7. To have rights of way, liberty to burn charcoal and stack coal paying 13s. 4 d. for opening any new pit.

8. To show no Book but the blacksmith's.

10. Not to sink any pit in the Park but to get 40 yards of coals in the Park if same may be got from a pit outside.

11. To pave Allisher Lane.

12. To have utensils then in use on the colliery.
