Simon Fund (Social Sciences) Committee Minutes

Scope and Content

A sessional committee of Senate, the Simon Fund (Social Sciences) Committee administered awards made from the Fund to visiting academics in the social sciences. The Fund was established in 1944 with funds provided by Ernest Simon (Lord Simon of Wythenshawe), the then Chairman of Council. The Fund provided for Simon Research Fellows and later the Simon Visiting Professors. The Research Fellowships were open to individuals from outside the university world who had research expertise in relevant areas. Most of the recipients were associated with the Faculty of Economic and Social Studies, although the Faculty of law, and departments of Education, Psychology and Philosophy also hosted Simon award holders. [Lord Simon had also established a Fund for university Entertainment, administered by a separate committee]. Pre-1966 minutes can be found in USC/2.
