Askham Bog Nature Reserve

Scope and Content

Papers and photographs concerning the stewardship, ecology and attributes of the site, which was acquired in 1946 as the Trust's first nature reserve. Topics covered: acquisition, negotiation with landowners, research on site, pollution, water level management and liaison with the Internal Drainage Board, planning applications particularly for adjacent developments and the construction of the York ring road.
Papers include press cuttings relating to the acquisition of the site 1946; Nature Reserve Management Committee Minutes 1957-2005; records of species on site including botanical records and surveys 1946-1992; ornithological records 1977- 1979; ecological research papers (published and unpublished) 1933-2005; peat stratigraphy data 1974; hydrological records 1968-2010 and photographs 1933-1996.

Access Information

Records are open to the public, subject to the overriding provisions of relevant legislation, including data protection laws. 24 hours' notice is required to access photographic material.

Acquisition Information

Deposited with the Borthwick Institute by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust in 2016.

Conditions Governing Use

A reprographics service is available to researchers. Copying will not be undertaken if there is any risk of damage to the document. Copies are supplied in accordance with the Borthwick Institute for Archives' terms and conditions for the supply of copies, and under provisions of any relevant copyright legislation. Permission to reproduce images of documents in the custody of the Borthwick Institute must be sought.

Appraisal Information

The files were weeded for duplicates by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust staff prior to deposit. Material of insufficient archival value has been removed and returned to Wakefield.
