File: American Studies

Scope and Content

Papers relating to the Department of American Studies. The University first discussed making arrangements for American Studies in 1941, but it was not until 1948 when Isaac Kandel was appointed to a chair that the subject came into formal existence. Kandel retired in 1950, and the subject was administered by Marcus Cunliffe in a non-professorial role (Cunliffe was made professor in 1959). The papers include the original discussions about the propriety and utility of adopting the subject, as well as the appointment of Kandel in 1947/8, and the search for a successor in 1950/1.
