File: Emergency Statutes

Scope and Content

Emergency statutes were introduced by UK universities during the Second World War to deal with the special circumstances of wartime. Statutes were temporarily altered or waived in areas such as courses of study, award of war degrees, postponement of appointments, and the use of endowments. Changes were authorised by the Privy Council Office, in line with statutory requirements, The file includes a few documents concerning the University's emergency statute of July 1940; there are also numerous documents concerning arrangements at other UK universities.
