Bundle of Letters

Scope and Content

Concerning the candidature of Mark Ashton, schoolmaster from Heywood. Application letter from Ashton, and reference letters from:

  • Henry Whitaker and John Hargreaves [joint signatories]
  • B. Glover
  • John Bright
  • Sutcliffe Firth and 12 co-signatories
  • Alexander Mackie
  • Thomas Rawllinson and Jas Wolstencroft [joint signatories]

Also letter from Ashton to the committee. The committee was unhappy with the provisions he had made for his wife and family. He proses that his wife either stays with his mother, brother and sister for the duration of the course, or that the whole family move to Manchester and stay with his brother-in-law. His wife is 'very ready with her needle and could augment our income a little'. If the committee do not like these plans, he proposes as an alternative to furnish a 'sitting and bed room' and get one or two student to move in with him.
