McFadden Research

Administrative / Biographical History

Hugh Crawford Ross, Sir Ronald’s brother, had been conducting research into induced cell reproduction and cancer for the Southern Hospital Research Committee with finance supplied by Sir William Hartley and J. McFadden. After some disagreement between H.C. Ross and the Research Committee, Sir Ronald wrote to McFadden asking if he would continue to finance the research through the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. In 1911 H.C. Ross was given permission to use the laboratories in the School of Tropical Medicine on condition that his work and all the finances were under the close supervision of Ronald Ross. At this time Edward Halford Ross was working as Sir Ronald’s assistant. In April 1911 H.C. Ross was offered laboratories in the Lister Institute in London where E.H. Ross joined him later that year. Until Sir RoNald’s move to London in 1913 both brothers kept him informed of their progress.
