Since 1872/3, Manchester Museum has been an integral part of the University, and has been administered by a Museum Committee. It was established when the collections of the Manchester Natural History Society and Manchester Geological Society were transferred to Owens College. The Committee included representatives of Manchester City Council and, in its early days, the Museum's subscribers.
