Student Lodgings Committee Minutes

Scope and Content

The Student Lodgings Committee was appointed by Council on 15 November 1961 and first met in January 1962. Its purpose was to help devise a University policy on the supervision of students in lodgings. In 1959 the University Council had recommended that all students under 21 years should live in University-approved accommodation and all lodgings used by students should have official University approval. This policy reflected University's concern to exercise greater pastoral care over students in lodgings, after concerns had been expressed about the effects of poor accommodation on their academic prowess. The Committee, chaired by A. H. Allman, received reports from the Wardens of Students Lodgings, and in turn reported to the Student Accommodation Committee. In Feb 1972 , following the death of A. H. Allman, the Committee was discharged and its functions were taken over by the Accommodation Committee.
