Scope and Content

Manuscript and collated proofs of PN Review 13 (1979). Entitled Crisis for Cranmer and King James, this was the first entire issue of the magazine to be devoted to one special theme, and was guest-edited by David Martin. It contained essays, poems, testimonials and petitions from numerous well-known literary and public figures relating to the Book of Common Prayer and the King James Bible, which it was felt were under threat of being sidelined by the Church of England. The magazine also included two petitions on the issue with lists of signatories. The issue included: essays by David Martin, Basil Mitchell, C.H. Sisson, Geoffrey Shepherd, Richard K. Fenn, Mary Warnock, Basil Cottle, Andrew Louth, Daniel Jenkins, Ian Robinson, Roger Homan, Dudley Young, Roy Fuller, Arthur Pollard, Paul Seabury, C.A. Anthony Kilmister, John Bowker, Michael Wheeler, Ulrich Simon and Derek Brewer; and quotes or extracts from Iris Murdoch, A.J.P. Taylor, Alan Garner, Helen Gardner, Michael Foot, Sir John Betjeman, Philip Larkin, Lord Robbins, Alfred Deller, Ruth Pitter, Alex McCowen, Sir David Willcocks, Paul Scofield, Joyce Grenfell, Edmund Rubbra, Francis Jackson, R.M. Hare, R.J. Zwi Werblowsky, George Tolley, Hugh Trevor-Roper, Christabel Burniston, Valerie Eliot and Herbert Howells.
