The letter is written over two days, and discusses an evening out talking with other people. Includes a related poem written by Larkin entitled 'Evensong '(beginning "I think I read, or have been told..."), and comments on the difference between poets and novelists. Reference is made to Charles Dickens and 'The Pickwick Papers'; Katherine Mansfield and 'The Doves' Nest'; and D. H. Lawrence (whose name is typed in red throughout), Stephen Spender (quoting the poem 'I think continually...'), and Gerard Manley Hopkins. Larkin ends by answering Sutton's previous letter point by point. (8pp.) The final page is an illustration of Aldous Huxley arguing with a cab driver, which Larkin refers to on page 6 of the letter.
