Letter from Jos. D. Hooker [Joseph Dalton Hooker] to George Maw

Scope and Content

Written from Kew. Manuscript

He thanks Maw for his troubles; Smith [John Smith, curator at Kew] thinks £2 is too expensive for the four plants (Ranunculus, Peperomia, Fagus and Calligonum) but they will not let Maw pay for them as they can afford it; his intention was for Maw to keep the Ranunculus himself, and parts of the Calligonum and Peperomia if divisible, though the Fagus would not suit him; £4 10s 0d is 'dirt cheap' for the entire collection, but they are not worth the room at Kew as they have them all but the four; if Maw could house the plants for a while they would be grateful, as they are very busy; Jones [unidentified] should send home a good lot of the Ranunculus and other alpines from New Zealand, of which many are beautiful
