Unsigned letter [from Joseph Dalton Hooker] to George Maw

Scope and Content

Written from Royal Gardens, Kew. Manuscript

He has enjoyed reviewing the sheet of citations, and gives corrections and advice; he worries Maw will think him overly critical, but he knows from experience that fixing small issues near the beginning of a work will prevent them being magnified from repetition by the end; he thinks the work is wonderful, and well worth making as perfect as possible in all senses; he himself has been careless in descriptive work, and he regrets it; the wood cut is very nice; he has seen Baker [John Gilbert Baker, botanist, keeper of the Kew Herbarium], who objects to the English description being cut up
