Correspondence with Frederick Maurice Powicke, (1879-1963), historian. Powicke was a former pupil and colleague of Tait at Manchester.

174/1 Letter from Tait: /1 10 Nov 1942, views on Dispenser barony and landholdings in Cheshire. Personal circumstances, research on Middlewich charters.

Letters from Powicke:

174/2 21 Jun 1904, asks for information on Thomas, prior of Conishead and William, prior of Cartmel.

174/3 2 Sep 1904, sends a manuscript, requesting comments.

174/4 9 May 1905, responds to comments that Tait has made on his manuscript.

174/5 22 Jul 1905, describes changes made to text; mentions "Leonard's" promotion at Bristol (Powicke had applied for same post).

174/6 21 Nov 1905, comments on his article [unidentified].

174/7 30 Jun 1906, marking of examination papers; provides transcript in French from C J Beautemp Beaupré Coutumes et institutions de l'Anjou & du Maine (8 vols. 1877-1897), concerning use of term "barones" in charters;

174/8 22 Mar 1915, will join Chetham Society discusses possible projects including an edition of the St Werburgh's cartualry and transcripts provided by Fergusson Irvine. Attached are ten letters mostly from W Fergusson Irvine [Chetham Society] to Tait and William Farrer concerning publication of the St Werburgh's cartulary edited by Tait and published by the Society in two volumes, 1920 and 1923].

174/9 1 Jun 1918 thanks for his comments on Powicke's article in English Historical Review; reports comments of "Adams of Yale" on same.

174/10 13 Jan 1919, comments on Tait's retirement and loss to University "for you are an institution in yourself..."

174/11 22 Feb 1924, asks if could give a talk at Whalley [Abbey] to the [University] Historical Society; Tait's contribution to a festschrift for Tout; Powicke's researches on Richard I, looking at London documents, and believes Mary Bateson rather J H Round is correct on matter of elective council;

/174/12 14 Jan 1925, describes his stay in the USA and his views of US universities.

/174/13 18 Sep 1926, encloses a manuscript (not by Powicke) and asks for Tait's comments.

/174/14 3 Dec 1929, informs Tait he will be invited to give Ford's lectures for 1930/1 and hopes he will accept; feels would be "numb" if did not; claims he is "anxious to keep up the relationship between Oxford and Manchester".

/174/15 23 Nov 1935, an error relating to a notice in English Historical Review Oct 1933; notes death of "Willard" [i.e. James Willard, historian].

/174/16 8 Jul 1936, praises Medieval English borough; death of his son, Peter.

/174/17 23 Jun 1937, encloses a letter from an Oxford student [not present], and asks for Tait's advice [subject unclear].
