Scope and Content

From Martin Weinbaum, (b.1902), historian.. Weinbaum was author of the third volume of British Borough Charters 1307-1660 (Cambridge 1943). He fled from Nazi Germany and was employed for a period at the University of Manchester in the 1930s.

230/1-3 26 Jul 1927, unable to give a considered view on London common council in 13th century as promised, and believes may not be able to reach definite conclusions about early history. Discusses research at Bodleian; attached is a draft or transcript in Tait's hand of a review of Weinbaum's London unter Eduard i und II (Stuttgart 1933) for English Historical Review. and of Verfassungsgeschichte London 1066-1268 (Stuttgart 1929).

230/4 Letter 4 Apr 1929, thanks for manuscript; has adopted to most of Tait's criticisms.

230/5 21 21 Jun 1936, thanks for copy of his book, and believes it will be well received.

230/6 29 Oct 1938, his recent move to the USA and employment at Kent State University; thanks for suggestions, and hopes to finish his research soon.

230/7 undated letter, a query concerning aldermen's sheriff in 14th century London; currently on holiday in Cornwall sponsored by Academic Assistance Council [dating letter to 1933 or after].

230/8 Letter dated 2 Oct [prob. 1930], thanks for Tait's comments on his work, discusses some of points made probably concerning British Borough Charters.
