This sub-series consists of letters from a diverse range of Mary Hamilton's friends and acquaintances including: the bluestocking Hester Chapone née Mulso (1727-1801), writer (HAM/1/9/1); Dr Thomas Newton, Bishop of Bristol (HAM/1/9/54); Sarah ('Sally') More (1743-1819), sister of Hannah More, who writes of her sister's work being attacked by two clergymen (HAM/1/9/116); Georgiana, Countess Spencer (1737–1814) (HAM/1/9/34, /107); the daughters of James Boswell, who write on the death of their father (HAM/1/9/96); and the Rev. Dr Bernard, Provost of Eton (HAM/1/9/51).
The letters relate to social engagements, literature including the works of Frances Burney (see HAM/1/9/98), news of friends and family, charity, and the number of French people escaping from the Revolution to England (HAM/1/9/91). HAM/1/9/10-12 are from Montagu Pennington, a nephew of Elizabeth Carter, whose letters relate to the will of his aunt, a legacy to Hamilton and Carter's letters appearing in the newspapers. Mary Palmer (c.1750-1820), niece of Sir Joshua Reynolds, writes to Hamilton inviting her to meet her future husband whom she describes as her 'greatest favourite who is one of the most agreeable men in the World' (HAM/1/9/67).
